We do better when we know better!
Beekeepers need to have a solid understanding of honeybee biology and basic beekeeping methods. New beekeepers should take basic beekeeping courses and read at least three different beekeeping guides. Become a member of a beekeeping association that holds regular meetings. Don't forget to subscribe to a beekeeping magazine! When we know better, we do better!
About the 2024 classes
Classes are held on Saturday, starting 9 am and ending between 4:30 pm - 5:00 pm at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Lawrence, Kansas. It's the only place large enough that doesn't cost and arm & a leg. We try to keep rates low. As a non-profit we budget to cover expenses, which we come very close to doing each year that we have put on this class. Class dates are: January 27, 2024 and February 24 & 25, 2024. Plan on arriving a little early for better seating. Doors open at 8:30 AM

about our beginning bee class for february 2024
In our class, we start with an overview and short history of beekeeping, followed by detailed and hands-on instruction on how to become a beekeeper. We will introduce you to bee equipment and honey bee biology. Next, we'll present on ways to obtain honey bees. We'll also talk present on installing your new bees and how to give them the best start. What to expect during the summer, and how to manage going into fall for the winter.
On the 2nd day, we'll present on how to take a look or inspect your bee colony. We'll get into varroa mite management and the varies ways this pest can be treated to try to keep your bees healthy and survive going into fall, winter, and next spring. We'll go over extracting basics: removing your honey crop and checking for moisture content. Yes, bees get problems with diseases and pests in keeping a healthy hive.Ending the class, we'll be letting you know what the association has to offer in our programs and events. We'll also have some Q&A at the end of the sessions as time allows.

There are many things to learn before embarking on this adventure. Our bee class is a combination of hands-on demonstrations and lecture-led discussions that will inspire you to get prepared and get started.
The course covers bee equipment, bee biology and anatomy, starting your first hive, products of the hive, bee friendly vegetation, and many other honey bee related subjects.
Our Bee Class is great for people who are interested in getting started with honey bees and beekeeping. This is the course to benefit you in getting started. And perhaps,if you have taken our bee class before, you may want to take it again as a re-fresher. It'll make even more sense after you've already had your bees for a season or several.

We can help you get started in keeping honey bees
As a local association, we've been around for a while...since 1948! People are keeping bees in the city, suburbs, as well as out in the country! We make beekeeping fun and interesting. We share ideas on best practices - keeping your bees alive, ways to collect and harvest honey, process bees wax, market your products. We have always been BIG on honey bee education. We share ideas on what to do with your beeswax, and how to best present your products. We have members of all ages and levels--new hobbyist to professional.
